Life force

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Life force (also known as vital force, vital energy, élan vital, or vital essence) is a concept that refers to a form of energy that is said to animate living beings. It is a central concept in many systems of alternative medicine and spiritual belief systems.

Concept[edit | edit source]

The concept of a life force is found in many cultures throughout history, and is often associated with the breath. In Chinese culture, it is known as Qi; in Indian culture, it is known as Prana. In Western philosophy, the concept can be traced back to the ancient Greeks, who believed in a life force they called Pneuma.

In alternative medicine[edit | edit source]

In many systems of alternative medicine, the life force is believed to be a vital component of health and well-being. It is often believed that imbalances or blockages in the flow of life force can lead to illness, and that restoring the proper flow of life force can promote healing.

Criticism[edit | edit source]

The concept of a life force is not accepted by mainstream science, as it is not measurable or observable in the same way as other forms of energy. Critics argue that the concept is vague and unscientific, and that it is often used to justify unproven treatments and therapies.
