- Ligonier was platted in 1835. The city was named after John Ligonier, a British soldier who fought in the French and Indian War. The city was incorporated in 1866 and has grown steadily since then.

- Ligonier is located at 41°28′17″N 85°35′23″W. The city has a total area of 2.36 square miles, all land. It is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, including several parks and natural reserves.

- As of the 2010 census, there were 4,405 people, 1,472 households, and 1,020 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,865.7 inhabitants per square mile. There were 1,569 housing units at an average density of 664.8 per square mile.
