Warsaw

Warsaw (Polish: Warszawa) is the capital city and largest city of Poland. It is located on the Vistula River in east-central Poland, roughly 260 kilometres from the Baltic Sea and 300 kilometres from the Carpathian Mountains. Its population is estimated at 1.8 million residents within a greater metropolitan area of 3.1 million residents, making Warsaw the 7th most-populous capital city in the European Union.

Warsaw's history is one of plagues, invasions, and destruction, followed by periods of rapid economic growth, cultural development, and political importance in the region and beyond. The city's roots can be traced back to the 13th century when it was a small fishing village named Warszowa. The city's fortunes changed dramatically in the 16th century when it was chosen as the new capital of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Warsaw is located in east-central Poland, about 300 km (190 mi) from both the Baltic Sea and the Carpathian Mountains. It lies in the middle of the Masovian Plain, which is flat and has a mix of forest and farmland.

Warsaw is the economic hub of Poland and is the 7th largest economy in the European Union by GDP. It is a major international tourist destination and a significant cultural, political and economic hub. Its historical Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Warsaw is a major educational center in Poland. It is home to several universities, including the University of Warsaw, the Warsaw University of Technology, and the Medical University of Warsaw.

Warsaw has a well-developed network of public transport, including buses, trams, and a metro system. The city is also served by the Warsaw Chopin Airport, the busiest airport in Poland.
