Lionel de Jersey Harvard (1893–1918) was a British soldier and the first known person of African descent to attend Harvard University. He was a member of the prominent Harvard family, which has historical ties to the university.

Lionel de Jersey Harvard was born in London, England, in 1893. He was a descendant of John Harvard, the university's namesake. His family had a long-standing connection to Harvard University, which played a significant role in his educational journey.

Education[edit | edit source]

Lionel de Jersey Harvard attended Harvard University and graduated in 1915. During his time at Harvard, he was known for his academic excellence and active participation in various student organizations. He was a member of the Harvard Crimson, the university's daily newspaper, and participated in several other extracurricular activities.

Military Service[edit | edit source]

After graduating from Harvard, Lionel de Jersey Harvard joined the British Army during World War I. He served as a lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery. His service was marked by bravery and dedication, and he was highly regarded by his peers and superiors.

Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Lionel de Jersey Harvard was killed in action on August 30, 1918, during the Battle of the Somme. His death was a significant loss to both his family and the Harvard community. In his honor, the Lionel de Jersey Harvard Scholarship was established at Harvard University to support students of African descent.
