Liow Tiong Lai

Liow Tiong Lai (born October 13, 1961) is a Malaysian politician who has served in various ministerial roles in the Malaysian government. He is a member of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), a major component party of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Liow was born in Jasin, Malacca, Malaysia. He completed his early education in Malacca before pursuing higher education at the University of Malaya, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Community Health. He later obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Strathclyde in the United Kingdom.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Liow began his political career in the MCA, where he quickly rose through the ranks. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bentong constituency in the 1999 general election. He has successfully retained his seat in subsequent elections.

Ministerial Roles[edit | edit source]

Liow has held several key ministerial positions throughout his career:

  • Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports (2006-2008): Liow was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, where he focused on developing youth programs and promoting sports in Malaysia.
  • Minister of Health (2008-2013): As the Minister of Health, Liow implemented various healthcare reforms and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of healthcare services in Malaysia.
  • Minister of Transport (2014-2018): During his tenure as the Minister of Transport, Liow oversaw significant developments in Malaysia's transportation infrastructure, including the expansion of public transportation networks and the enhancement of road safety measures.

Liow served as the President of the MCA from 2013 to 2018. Under his leadership, the party aimed to strengthen its position within the BN coalition and address issues affecting the Chinese community in Malaysia.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Liow is married to Lee Sun Loo, and they have three children. He is known for his dedication to public service and his commitment to improving the lives of Malaysians.
