List of official symbols of the U.S. state of Washington



The state of Washington has a variety of official symbols, as designated by the Washington State Legislature. These symbols represent the cultural heritage and natural treasures of the state.

State Symbols[edit | edit source]

  • State Bird: The Willow Goldfinch (Spinus tristis) was designated the state bird in 1951.
  • State Fish: The Steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was designated the state fish in 1969.
  • State Flower: The Coast Rhododendron (Rhododendron macrophyllum) was designated the state flower in 1959.
  • State Tree: The Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) was designated the state tree in 1947.
  • State Insect: The Green Darner (Anax junius) was designated the state insect in 1997.
  • State Gemstone: Petrified Wood was designated the state gemstone in 1975.
  • State Fossil: The Columbian Mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) was designated the state fossil in 1998.
  • State Marine Mammal: The Orca (Orcinus orca) was designated the state marine mammal in 2005.
  • State Ship: The Lady Washington was designated the state ship in 2007.
  • State Fruit: The Apple was designated the state fruit in 1989.
  • State Vegetable: The Walla Walla Sweet Onion was designated the state vegetable in 2007.
  • State Dance: The Square Dance was designated the state dance in 1979.
  • State Endemic Mammal: The Olympic Marmot (Marmota olympus) was designated the state endemic mammal in 2009.
  • State Amphibian: The Pacific Chorus Frog (Pseudacris regilla) was designated the state amphibian in 2007.
  • State Grass: The Bluebunch Wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata) was designated the state grass in 1989.
  • State Soil: Tokul was designated the state soil in 1983.
  • State Tartan: The Washington State Tartan was designated the state tartan in 1991.
