Aircraft accidents and incidents have been a tragic part of aviation history. The following is a list of some of the deadliest aircraft accidents and incidents that have occurred over the years.

1. Tenerife Airport Disaster[edit | edit source]

The Tenerife Airport Disaster remains one of the deadliest aviation accidents in history. It occurred on March 27, 1977, when two Boeing 747 passenger jets collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife North Airport) in the Canary Islands. The collision resulted in the deaths of 583 people.

2. Japan Airlines Flight 123[edit | edit source]

Japan Airlines Flight 123, a Boeing 747, crashed into Mount Osutaka on August 12, 1985, killing 520 of the 524 people on board. It remains the deadliest single-aircraft accident in history.

3. Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision[edit | edit source]

The Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision occurred on November 12, 1996, when a Saudi Arabian Airlines flight collided with a Kazakhstan Airlines flight near Charkhi Dadri, Haryana, India. The accident resulted in the deaths of all 349 people on board both aircraft.

4. Malaysia Airlines Flight 17[edit | edit source]

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, resulting in the deaths of all 298 passengers and crew on board. The incident remains one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent history.

5. American Airlines Flight 191[edit | edit source]

American Airlines Flight 191 crashed on May 25, 1979, shortly after takeoff from O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois. The crash resulted in the deaths of all 271 passengers and crew on board, as well as two people on the ground.

6. Turkish Airlines Flight 981[edit | edit source]

Turkish Airlines Flight 981 crashed on March 3, 1974, near Paris, France, after a cargo door blew off mid-flight. The crash resulted in the deaths of all 346 people on board.
