Rice is a staple food for a large part of the world's human population, especially in Asia and the West Indies. It is the agricultural commodity with the third-highest worldwide production. Rice dishes are popular and numerous. This article provides a list of notable rice dishes.

Types of Rice Dishes[edit | edit source]

Pilaf[edit | edit source]

Pilaf is a dish in which rice is cooked in a seasoned broth. In some cases, the rice may also attain its brown or golden color by first being sautéed lightly in oil before the addition of broth.

Biryani[edit | edit source]

Biryani is a mixed rice dish with its origins among the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent. It is made with Indian spices, rice, and meat (chicken, beef, goat, pork, fish, or prawn), and sometimes, in addition, eggs and/or vegetables.

Fried rice is a dish of cooked rice that has been stir-fried in a wok or a frying pan and is usually mixed with other ingredients such as eggs, vegetables, seafood, or meat.

Risotto[edit | edit source]

Risotto is a northern Italian rice dish cooked with broth until it reaches a creamy consistency. The broth can be derived from meat, fish, or vegetables.

Paella is a Spanish rice dish originally from Valencia. Paella is one of the best-known dishes in Spanish cuisine.

Jambalaya[edit | edit source]

Jambalaya is a popular dish of West African, French, and Spanish influence, consisting mainly of meat and vegetables mixed with rice.

Sushi[edit | edit source]

Sushi is a traditional Japanese dish of prepared vinegared rice, usually with some sugar and salt, accompanying a variety of ingredients, such as seafood, vegetables, and occasionally tropical fruits.
