List of Soybean Diseases

This article provides an overview of the various diseases that can affect soybean crops. Soybeans (Glycine max) are a crucial crop worldwide, used for animal feed, cooking oil, and numerous soy products. Understanding the diseases that can impact soybean production is essential for effective management and control strategies.

Bacterial Diseases[edit | edit source]

  • Bacterial blight caused by Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. glycinea. This disease is characterized by angular leaf spots and blight.
  • Bacterial pustule caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. glycines. Symptoms include pustules on the undersides of leaves.
  • Wildfire caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci. The disease presents as irregular brown spots surrounded by a yellow halo.

Fungal Diseases[edit | edit source]

  • Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum truncatum. Symptoms include dark, sunken lesions on stems, pods, and leaves.
  • Downy mildew caused by Peronospora manshurica. This disease is noticeable by pale green to yellow spots on the upper leaf surface and a fluffy, pale growth on the underside.
  • Frogeye leaf spot caused by Cercospora sojina. It is identified by circular to irregular dark spots on leaves.
  • Phytophthora root and stem rot caused by Phytophthora sojae. Symptoms include damping-off in seedlings and rotting of roots and lower stems in mature plants.
  • Soybean rust caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi. This disease is characterized by small, raised pustules on the undersides of leaves.

Viral Diseases[edit | edit source]

  • Soybean mosaic virus (SMV). Symptoms include mottling and distortion of leaves, along with reduced yield and seed quality.
  • Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV). It causes mottling and distortion of leaves and can lead to significant yield loss.

Nematode Diseases[edit | edit source]

  • Soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines). This nematode causes yellowing and stunting of plants, leading to reduced yields.
  • Root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.). Symptoms include galling on roots, stunted growth, and yield loss.

Management[edit | edit source]

Management of soybean diseases involves a combination of practices, including crop rotation, resistant varieties, timely planting, and appropriate use of fungicides and nematicides. Early detection and accurate diagnosis are critical for effective disease control.
