Little Tavern[edit | edit source]

Little Tavern was a fast food restaurant chain that operated in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States from 1927 to 2008. Founded by Harry F. Duncan in 1927, Little Tavern became known for its small, square hamburgers, often referred to as "sliders."

History[edit | edit source]

Little Tavern was first established in 1927 by Harry F. Duncan in Louisville, Kentucky. The restaurant quickly gained popularity for its unique approach to fast food, offering small, affordable hamburgers that were served quickly. The concept of the "slider" was born, and it became a signature item on the menu.

In the following years, Little Tavern expanded its operations and opened multiple locations throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, including Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The chain became a beloved local institution, known for its distinctive white porcelain enamel buildings and neon signs.

Despite its initial success, Little Tavern faced challenges in the later years. The rise of larger fast food chains and changing consumer preferences led to a decline in sales. In 2008, the last remaining Little Tavern location in Laurel, Maryland, closed its doors, marking the end of an era.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Although Little Tavern is no longer in operation, its impact on the fast food industry and local communities is still remembered. The chain's unique approach to fast food and its iconic "sliders" left a lasting impression on many customers.

Today, there are efforts to preserve the memory of Little Tavern through various means, including historical documentation and preservation of the remaining buildings. Some former Little Tavern locations have been repurposed for other businesses, while others have been designated as historic landmarks.
