Livanjsko polje

Livanjsko polje is a karst field located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, specifically in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. It is the largest field of its kind in the country, and one of the largest in the world. The field is named after the town of Livno, which is situated on its edge.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Livanjsko polje is situated in the western part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, between the Dinaric Alps to the west and the Central Bosnian mountains to the east. The field is approximately 50 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide, covering an area of about 450 square kilometers. It is characterized by its flat terrain, which is a result of the karstification process.

Hydrology[edit | edit source]

The field is known for its complex hydrological system. It is drained by the Bistrica river, which disappears underground in the dry season and reappears in the wet season. There are also several sinkholes and caves in the field, which are part of the karst landscape.

Flora and Fauna[edit | edit source]

Livanjsko polje is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The field is predominantly covered by grasslands, which are used for grazing by local farmers. There are also patches of deciduous and coniferous forests in the area. The field is a habitat for several species of birds, mammals, and reptiles.

The economy of the area surrounding Livanjsko polje is largely based on agriculture, particularly livestock farming and dairy farming. The field is known for its high-quality cheese, which is a major export product. Other economic activities in the area include forestry and tourism.
