Livermore Valley AVA
Livermore Valley AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in the Tri-Valley region of California. It is one of the oldest wine regions in the state, with a history of viticulture dating back to the 19th century. The AVA is situated in Alameda County and extends into parts of Contra Costa County.
History[edit | edit source]
The Livermore Valley has a rich history of wine production. The first vineyards were planted in the 1840s by Robert Livermore, a British sailor who settled in the area. The region gained prominence in the late 19th century when Charles Wetmore, a pioneer in California viticulture, established the Cresta Blanca Winery. Wetmore's wines gained international acclaim, winning a grand prize at the 1889 Paris Exposition.

The valley is surrounded by coastal ranges, which provide a natural barrier against extreme weather. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The diurnal temperature variation, with hot days and cool nights, is ideal for grape growing.

The soils in the Livermore Valley are diverse, ranging from gravelly loam to clay. These well-drained soils are particularly suited for viticulture, allowing for deep root penetration and healthy vine growth.
