Lizzie van Zyl was born in South Africa in the late 19th century. Little is known about her early life before the outbreak of the Second Boer War.

During the Second Boer War, Lizzie van Zyl and her family were caught up in the conflict between the British Empire and the Boer Republics. As part of the British strategy to control the Boer population, many Boer civilians, including women and children, were placed in concentration camps.
