Londis (United Kingdom)
Londis is a chain of convenience stores operating in the United Kingdom. The brand is owned by the Booker Group, which is a subsidiary of Tesco. Londis stores are typically independently owned and operated, providing a range of groceries, household items, and other convenience products.
History[edit | edit source]
Londis was founded in 1959 by a group of independent retailers who wanted to benefit from collective buying power. The name "Londis" is derived from "London District Stores." Over the years, the chain expanded significantly, becoming a well-known name in the UK convenience store sector.
In 2004, Londis was acquired by the Musgrave Group, an Irish food wholesaler. This acquisition helped to further expand the brand's presence in the UK. In 2015, the Booker Group purchased Londis from Musgrave, integrating it into its portfolio of retail brands.
Operations[edit | edit source]
Londis stores are franchised, meaning they are owned and operated by independent retailers. This model allows store owners to benefit from the support and buying power of a larger organization while maintaining their independence. The stores offer a wide range of products, including fresh produce, dairy, bakery items, and household essentials.
Products and Services[edit | edit source]
Londis stores provide a variety of products and services to meet the needs of local communities. These include:
- Fresh groceries
- Chilled and frozen foods
- Beverages, including alcoholic drinks
- Household and cleaning products
- Newspapers and magazines
- Lottery tickets
- PayPoint services for bill payments and mobile top-ups
Community Involvement[edit | edit source]
Londis stores often play a significant role in their local communities. Many stores support local charities and community events, providing a valuable service to their customers beyond just retail.
