It was formed in 1965 when the Municipal Borough of Mitcham, the Municipal Borough of Wimbledon, and the Merton and Morden Urban District were merged into a single borough under the London Government Act 1963. The borough was named after Merton, which reflects the historical importance of the area. Merton is known for its green spaces, including parts of the Wimbledon Common and Mitcham Common, and for being the location of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, where the Wimbledon Championships, one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, is held annually.
