Long Distance Walkers Association
Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA) is a British association that caters to those interested in the activity of long-distance walking. Founded in 1972, the LDWA aims to further the interests of those who enjoy the challenge of walking long distances in rural, mountainous, or moorland areas. The association is known for its comprehensive database of long-distance paths, its regular publication of a handbook and newsletter for members, and the organization of hundreds of challenge and social walks each year.
History[edit | edit source]
The LDWA was established in 1972 by Chris Steer, Alan Blatchford, and Barbara Blatchford. The founding of the association was motivated by the desire to provide a platform for those interested in long-distance walking, a niche that was not well-served by existing walking or mountaineering organizations at the time. Since its inception, the LDWA has grown significantly in both membership and activities, reflecting the increasing popularity of long-distance walking as a leisure activity.
Activities[edit | edit source]
The core activities of the LDWA include the maintenance of a comprehensive list of long-distance paths in the UK, the publication of guides and newsletters, and the organization of walking events. These events range from social walks, which are designed to be inclusive and accessible to walkers of varying abilities, to challenge events, which test the endurance and navigation skills of participants over distances typically exceeding 20 miles.
Challenge Events[edit | edit source]
One of the hallmark activities of the LDWA is the organization of challenge events. These events are often characterized by long distances, significant elevation gain, and the requirement for participants to navigate the course. A notable example is the annual Hundred, a 100-mile walk that must be completed within 48 hours. The Hundred is hosted in different locations each year, offering participants the opportunity to explore diverse landscapes across the UK.
Membership[edit | edit source]
Membership in the LDWA is open to anyone with an interest in long-distance walking. Members benefit from access to detailed route information, discounts on publications and events, and the opportunity to join local group walks. The association is structured into local groups, which organize regular walks and social events, fostering a sense of community among members.
Publications[edit | edit source]
The LDWA publishes a variety of materials to support its members and promote long-distance walking. The most notable of these is the LDWA Handbook and Accommodation Guide, which provides comprehensive information on long-distance paths, including route descriptions, maps, and accommodation options. The association also publishes Strider, a quarterly magazine that features walk reports, event listings, and articles on walking-related topics.
Impact[edit | edit source]
The LDWA has played a significant role in promoting long-distance walking in the UK. Through its activities and publications, the association has contributed to the development and maintenance of long-distance paths, provided valuable resources for walkers, and fostered a vibrant community of walking enthusiasts. The LDWA's efforts have not only benefited its members but have also had a broader impact on outdoor recreation and the preservation of rural and wilderness areas.
