From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Longan (Dimocarpus longan), also known as dragon eye or lanzones, is a tropical tree species that belongs to the soapberry family. It is native to South Asia and the Indochinese peninsula, but its cultivation has spread to various parts of the world.

Description[edit | edit source]

The longan tree is evergreen and can grow up to 12 meters in height. The leaves are pinnately compound, with 6 to 9 elliptic-oblong to lanceolate leaflets. The flowers are small and yellowish white, appearing in terminal panicles. The fruit is a drupe, round to oval, and measures 1 to 2 cm in diameter. The peel is thin, leathery, and yellow to light brown in color. The flesh is translucent, sweet, and juicy, surrounding a single black seed.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Longan is cultivated for its edible fruit. It thrives in a tropical climate with high humidity and well-drained soil. The tree is propagated through seeds, air layering, or grafting. The fruiting season varies depending on the region and climate, but it generally occurs from mid-summer to early fall.

Uses[edit | edit source]

The longan fruit is consumed fresh or dried. It is also used in various culinary applications, such as desserts, salads, and beverages. In traditional Chinese medicine, longan is believed to have a calming effect and is used to treat insomnia and anxiety.

Health Benefits[edit | edit source]

Longan is rich in Vitamin C, Potassium, and antioxidants. It is believed to boost the immune system, improve skin health, and aid in digestion. However, more scientific research is needed to confirm these health benefits.
