Lorestan

Lorestan (also written as Luristan, Lurestan, or Loristan), is a province of western Iran in the Zagros Mountains. The population of Lorestan was estimated at 1,716,527 people in 2006.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Lorestan covers an area of 28,392 square kilometers. The major cities in this province are Khorramabad, Borujerd, Aligoodarz, Dorood, Koohdasht, Azna, Alashtar, Noor Abad, and Pol-e-Dokhtar.

History[edit | edit source]

Lorestan province is considered as one of the oldest regions in Iran and it is rich in historical and cultural heritage. The history of Lorestan is divided into two periods: pre-Islamic and post-Islamic.

Pre-Islamic Period[edit | edit source]

The pre-Islamic period is the time before the Arab invasion. The cultural and urban constructions of this era can be seen in Dimeh Mil Naderi, Tale Zang, Sorkh Deh chamber, Khazineh, Chehel Khaneh, Gerit, Iwan Karkheh, and Mir Fendereski Mausoleum.

Post-Islamic Period[edit | edit source]

The post-Islamic period is the time after the Arab invasion. The historical and urban constructions of this era can be seen in Shapur Khast fortress, Falak-ol-Aflak castle, Soltani Mosque of Borujerd, Imamzadeh Ja'far Borujerd, Imamzadeh Mohammad Borujerd, Imamzadeh Soltan Ali Khorramabad, and Jame Mosque of Borujerd.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Lorestan is based on agriculture, with the main products being cereal, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. The province also has various mineral resources including coal, iron, copper, and oil.

Culture[edit | edit source]

The people of Lorestan have a rich cultural heritage with many traditions and customs. They are known for their music, dance, and handicrafts.
