Louis-Victor Marcé
French psychiatrist known for his work on postpartum mental disorders
Louis-Victor Marcé (3 June 1828 – 16 March 1864) was a pioneering French psychiatrist who made significant contributions to the understanding of postpartum psychiatric disorders. He is best known for his work on the mental health of women during the postpartum period.

Louis-Victor Marcé was born in Paris, France, on 3 June 1828. He pursued his medical studies in Paris, where he developed an interest in psychiatry. Marcé was influenced by the work of prominent psychiatrists of his time, which led him to focus on the mental health of women, particularly during and after pregnancy.
Career[edit | edit source]
Marcé began his career at the Salpêtrière Hospital, a leading institution for the treatment of mental illness in Paris. Under the mentorship of renowned psychiatrists, he honed his skills and developed a keen interest in the psychiatric conditions associated with childbirth.
Contributions to Psychiatry[edit | edit source]
Marcé is best known for his seminal work, Traité de la Folie des Femmes Enceintes, des Nouvelles Accouchées et des Nourrices ("Treatise on the Insanity of Pregnant Women, New Mothers, and Wet Nurses"), published in 1858. In this treatise, he systematically described the various mental disorders that could affect women during the perinatal period.
Marcé's work was groundbreaking in that it was one of the first comprehensive studies on postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. He identified the unique psychological challenges faced by women during the postpartum period and emphasized the need for specialized care and understanding.

Louis-Victor Marcé's contributions laid the foundation for modern understanding of postpartum psychiatric disorders. His work highlighted the importance of recognizing and treating mental health issues in new mothers, a field that continues to evolve today.
In honor of his contributions, the Marcé Society for Perinatal Mental Health was established. This international organization is dedicated to supporting research and education in the field of perinatal mental health.

Marcé's promising career was cut short when he died on 16 March 1864, at the age of 35. Despite his early death, his work has had a lasting impact on the field of psychiatry.
