Louisville

Louisville is the largest city in the U.S. state of Kentucky, and the 29th most-populous city in the United States. Louisville was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark, making it one of the oldest cities west of the Appalachian Mountains. It is named after King Louis XVI of France.

Sited beside the Falls of the Ohio, the only major obstruction to river traffic between the upper Ohio River and the Gulf of Mexico, the settlement first grew as a portage site.

Louisville is located in the Bluegrass region. It is located on the Ohio River, at the border between Kentucky and Indiana.

As of the 2010 United States Census, the population of Louisville was 597,337.

Economy

Louisville today is home to dozens of companies and organizations across several industrial classifications. However, the underpinning of the city's economy since its earliest days has been the shipping and cargo industries. Its strategic location at the Falls of the Ohio, as well as its unique position in the central United States make it a practical location for the transfer of cargo along its route to other destinations.

Education

Louisville is home to several institutions of higher learning, including the University of Louisville.

Culture

Louisville is home to a number of annual cultural events. Perhaps most well-known is the Kentucky Derby, held annually during the first Saturday of May. The Derby is preceded by a two-week long Kentucky Derby Festival, which starts with the annual Thunder Over Louisville, the largest annual fireworks display in North America.
