Ludwig Stumpfegger (11 July 1910 – 2 May 1945) was a German SS officer and physician during World War II. He served as a personal surgeon to Adolf Hitler and was involved in the events surrounding the final days of the Third Reich.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Ludwig Stumpfegger was born on 11 July 1910 in Munich, Kingdom of Bavaria, German Empire. He pursued a career in medicine, studying at the University of Munich where he earned his medical degree.

Career[edit | edit source]

Stumpfegger joined the SS in 1933 and quickly rose through the ranks due to his medical expertise and loyalty to the Nazi Party. He became a member of the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, the personal bodyguard unit of Adolf Hitler.

Role in World War II[edit | edit source]

During World War II, Stumpfegger served as a surgeon in various capacities. In 1944, he was appointed as one of Hitler's personal physicians, working closely with Theodor Morell and Karl Brandt. Stumpfegger was present in the Führerbunker during the final days of the Battle of Berlin.

Final Days and Death[edit | edit source]

As the Red Army closed in on Berlin, Stumpfegger was among those who attempted to escape the city. On 2 May 1945, he, along with Martin Bormann and Artur Axmann, tried to break through the Soviet lines. Stumpfegger's body was later found near the Weidendammer Bridge in Berlin. The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear, but it is believed that he either committed suicide or was killed while attempting to escape.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Ludwig Stumpfegger's involvement with the Nazi regime and his role in the final days of the Third Reich have made him a subject of historical interest. His actions and the circumstances of his death continue to be studied by historians.
