Lynchburg lemonade
Lynchburg Lemonade is a cocktail that is named after Lynchburg, Tennessee, the hometown of the Jack Daniel's distillery. This refreshing drink is a blend of whiskey, lemon juice, triple sec, and lemon-lime soda. It is typically served in a highball glass over ice.
History[edit | edit source]
The Lynchburg Lemonade was first popularized in the 1980s by Alabama lounge owner Tony Mason. Mason claimed to have invented the cocktail and subsequently sued Jack Daniel's for using his recipe without permission. The case, known as Mason v. Jack Daniel's Distillery, was eventually decided in favor of the distillery.
Ingredients[edit | edit source]
The traditional recipe for Lynchburg Lemonade calls for:
- 1 part Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey
- 1 part Triple sec
- 1 part Lemon juice
- 4 parts Lemon-lime soda
All ingredients are combined in a highball glass filled with ice, then stirred and garnished with a lemon slice and a cherry.
Variations[edit | edit source]
There are several variations of the Lynchburg Lemonade. Some recipes substitute the lemon-lime soda with Sprite or 7 Up, while others add a splash of sour mix for extra tartness. A "Winter Lynchburg" substitutes the soda with hot apple cider.
In popular culture[edit | edit source]
The Lynchburg Lemonade has been featured in various media, including the film Cocktail starring Tom Cruise, and the television series Mad Men.
