MDPI (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute) is a publisher of open access scientific journals, founded by Shu-Kun Lin in 1996. The company is headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. MDPI publishes over 300 peer-reviewed, open access journals across a wide range of academic disciplines.
History[edit | edit source]
MDPI was originally established as a non-profit organization for the preservation of rare chemical samples. In 1996, it began publishing the journal Molecules, which was one of the first electronic journals in the field of chemistry. Over the years, MDPI expanded its portfolio to include journals in various scientific fields, including biology, engineering, and social sciences.
Open Access Model[edit | edit source]
MDPI operates under the open access model, which means that all its published articles are freely accessible to the public. This model is supported by article processing charges (APCs) paid by authors or their institutions. The open access model is intended to increase the dissemination and accessibility of scientific knowledge.
Peer Review Process[edit | edit source]
MDPI employs a rigorous peer review process to ensure the quality and integrity of the research it publishes. The process typically involves multiple reviewers who are experts in the relevant field. MDPI journals use a single-blind review process, where the reviewers know the identity of the authors, but the authors do not know the identity of the reviewers.
Controversies[edit | edit source]
MDPI has faced criticism and controversy over its business practices and the quality of its peer review process. Some critics have labeled it a "predatory publisher," although MDPI has been included in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), which suggests adherence to ethical publishing standards.
Impact and Reach[edit | edit source]
MDPI journals are indexed in major databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed. The publisher has a significant global reach, with authors and readers from around the world. MDPI's journals cover a wide range of disciplines, including medicine, biology, engineering, and social sciences.
