MV Anastasis was a hospital ship operated by the non-governmental organization Mercy Ships. The ship served as a floating hospital, providing medical care and humanitarian aid to various regions around the world.
History[edit | edit source]
MV Anastasis was originally built as an ocean liner before being acquired by Mercy Ships in 1978. The ship underwent extensive renovations to transform it into a fully equipped hospital ship. It entered service in 1982 and continued to serve until it was decommissioned in 2007.
Operations[edit | edit source]
During its 25 years of service, MV Anastasis visited numerous countries, primarily in Africa and Central America. The ship provided a wide range of medical services, including surgery, dental care, and ophthalmology. The medical staff on board consisted of volunteer doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals from around the world.
Facilities[edit | edit source]
The ship was equipped with several operating rooms, a dental clinic, an eye clinic, and wards for patients. It also had facilities for training local healthcare workers, which helped to improve medical care in the regions it visited.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
After its decommissioning in 2007, MV Anastasis was replaced by other ships in the Mercy Ships fleet, such as the Africa Mercy. The legacy of MV Anastasis continues through the ongoing work of Mercy Ships, which remains dedicated to providing medical care to those in need.
