- Macon County is a county located in the northern part of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the population was 15,566. Its county seat is Macon and the county was organized on January 6, 1837, from Chariton County and named for Nathaniel Macon, a U.S. Senator from North Carolina.
Geography[edit | edit source]
- Macon County encompasses a total area of 814 square miles (2,110 km2), of which 806 square miles (2,090 km2) is land and 7.7 square miles (20 km2) (0.9%) is water. The county is located in the northern part of Missouri, bordered by Chariton County to the west and Knox County to the east.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
- As of the 2010 census, there were 15,566 people, 6,443 households, and 4,348 families residing in the county. The population density was 19 people per square mile (7/km2). There were 7,840 housing units at an average density of 10 per square mile (4/km2).
