Microfilaria

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

(Redirected from Macrofilaricide)

Microfilaria is a term used to describe the early larval stage of certain parasitic nematodes in the family Onchocercidae. These nematodes are commonly known as filarial worms and include species that cause significant diseases in humans, such as Onchocerciasis (river blindness) and Lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis).

Life Cycle[edit | edit source]

The life cycle of microfilariae involves both a definitive host, typically a mammal, and an intermediate host, a blood-feeding insect such as a mosquito. The adult worms live in the definitive host and produce microfilariae, which circulate in the host's blood or skin. When the intermediate host feeds on the definitive host, it ingests the microfilariae, which then develop into infective larvae within the insect. These larvae are transmitted back to the definitive host when the insect feeds again.

Diseases[edit | edit source]

Microfilariae are responsible for several important diseases in humans. Onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness, is caused by the microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus. These microfilariae migrate to the skin and eyes, causing severe itching and potentially leading to blindness. Lymphatic filariasis, caused by the microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori, leads to the chronic swelling of limbs and genitals known as elephantiasis.

Diagnosis and Treatment[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of microfilarial infections typically involves the microscopic examination of blood or skin samples to identify the presence of microfilariae. Treatment depends on the specific species of worm involved, but often includes drugs such as Ivermectin, Doxycycline, and Albendazole.

Prevention and Control[edit | edit source]

Prevention and control of microfilarial diseases primarily involves vector control strategies, such as the use of insecticide-treated bed nets and indoor residual spraying. Mass drug administration programs are also used in many endemic areas to reduce the prevalence of infection. Template:Parasites-stub
