Madison is a city in Lake County, South Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Lake County. The population was 6,191 at the 2020 census. Madison is home to Dakota State University.

Madison was founded in 1880. It was named after Madison, Wisconsin, the native home of a first settler. The city was incorporated in 1885.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Madison is located at 44°0′28″N 97°6′53″W / 44.00778°N 97.11472°W
. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.61 square miles, of which 4.56 square miles is land and 0.05 square miles is water.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the census of 2020, there were 6,191 people, 2,715 households, and 1,515 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,357.2 inhabitants per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.0% African American, 1.1% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.

Madison is served by the Madison Central School District. The city is also home to Dakota State University, a public university known for its programs in computer information systems, computer science, and other technology-related fields.

The economy of Madison is diverse, with key sectors including education, healthcare, manufacturing, and retail. Dakota State University is one of the largest employers in the city.
