Mads Gilbert
Mads Gilbert is a Norwegian physician, humanitarian, and activist known for his work in conflict zones, particularly in the Gaza Strip. Born on June 2, 1947, in Porsgrunn, Norway, Gilbert has dedicated much of his career to providing emergency medical care to victims of conflict and advocating for human rights. Gilbert received his medical degree from the University of Oslo and later specialized in emergency medicine. He is a professor at the University of Tromsø, where he has been instrumental in developing the emergency medicine department. Gilbert's commitment to humanitarian work is evident from his numerous missions to conflict zones around the world, including Lebanon, Cambodia, and the Palestinian territories. One of Gilbert's most notable involvements was during the 2008-2009 Gaza War, also known as Operation Cast Lead. He and his colleague, Dr. Erik Fosse, were among the few Western doctors in Gaza during the conflict, providing critical medical care at Al-Shifa Hospital. Gilbert's firsthand accounts and critiques of the conditions in Gaza, including the impact of the blockade and military operations on the civilian population, garnered international attention. He has been a vocal critic of the Israeli military's actions in Gaza, arguing that they constitute violations of international law and human rights. Gilbert's advocacy extends beyond the emergency room. He has written several books and articles highlighting the plight of those living in conflict zones and the importance of international solidarity and humanitarian aid. His work has sparked debate and controversy, particularly his outspoken criticism of Israeli policies in the Palestinian territories. Despite the controversies, Gilbert's contributions to emergency medicine and humanitarian efforts have been recognized internationally. He has received several awards for his work, including the Fritt Ord Award and the Erik Bye Memorial Prize. Throughout his career, Gilbert has remained committed to the principle that access to medical care is a fundamental human right. He continues to advocate for the victims of conflict and to call for a just and peaceful resolution to conflicts around the world.
