This work not only marks a milestone in Czech cuisine but also reflects the cultural and social changes of the time.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Magdalena Dobromila Rettigová was born into the family of a wealthy farmer and merchant. She received a comprehensive education, which was quite unusual for women of her time. In 1801, she married Jan Alois Sudiprav Rettig, moving to Litomyšl and later to Prague. Her marriage, however, was not happy, and she sought solace and expression through writing.
Rettigová's literary career began with poetry and prose, focusing on themes of patriotism, morality, and the domestic life of women. Her works contributed significantly to the Czech National Revival, a movement aiming to revive Czech language, culture, and national identity.
Culinary Contributions[edit | edit source]
Her most famous work, A Household Cookery Book, was revolutionary in its approach. It was the first cookbook written in the Czech language, at a time when German was the dominant language in Bohemia and Moravia. The book contained over 1,000 recipes, ranging from traditional Czech dishes to influences from abroad, and it was reprinted multiple times, making it a staple in Czech kitchens.
Rettigová's cookbook went beyond mere recipes; it included advice on household management, nutrition, and even moral guidance. Her work emphasized the importance of domestic life and the role of women in maintaining the health and well-being of the family. This book not only provided practical culinary advice but also played a role in the promotion of Czech language and national identity.
