History[edit | edit source]

Prague has a rich history that dates back to the Paleolithic Age. The city was founded in the later 9th century, and soon became the seat of Bohemian kings, some of whom ruled as emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. The city thrived under the rule of Charles IV, who ordered the building of the New Town in the 14th century - many of the city's most important attractions date back to that age. The city also went through a number of broad changes, both culturally and physically, in the 20th century.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Prague is situated on the Vltava River in central Bohemia. The city is approximately 496 square kilometers in size. Prague is also a separate region of the country and is divided into a total of 22 administrative areas.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Prague is the wealthiest region in the Czech Republic in terms of GDP per capita. The city's economy is based largely on services and export. The city has become a significant location for IT, commercial, financial and business services.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Prague is a cultural centre of global significance. It is home to a number of famous cultural attractions, many of which survived the violence and destruction of 20th-century Europe. The main attractions include the Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, the Jewish Quarter, the Lennon Wall, and Petrin Hill.

Education[edit | edit source]

Prague is also a significant centre of education and is home to a number of universities, colleges, and schools. The oldest university in Central Europe, the Charles University, is located in Prague.
