Maluku (province)

Maluku is a province of Indonesia. It is located in the eastern part of the country, comprising the central and southern regions of the Maluku Islands. The provincial capital is Ambon. Maluku is known for its rich biodiversity, historical significance in the global spice trade, and diverse Indonesian culture.

Maluku province is made up of numerous islands, the largest of which are Seram, Buru, and Ambon Island. The province is divided into two peninsulas, the Halmahera Peninsula in the north and the Bird's Head Peninsula in the west. The Banda Sea lies to the south and the Seram Sea to the north.

The history of Maluku is marked by its strategic location and natural resources. The islands were known as the Spice Islands due to the nutmeg, mace, and cloves that were originally found exclusively there, attracting colonial powers such as the Portuguese, Dutch, and British.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Maluku is largely based on agriculture, with clove, nutmeg, and cocoa being the main crops. Fishing also plays a significant role in the local economy. In recent years, the province has been developing its tourism sector, with attractions such as the Banda Islands and the colonial fortresses of Benteng Victoria and Benteng Belgica.

The culture of Maluku is diverse, with influences from the native Melanesian and Austronesian peoples, as well as the European colonial powers. The province is known for its traditional music, such as the tifa drum and Totobuang ensemble, and dances like the Cakalele.
