Mammoth basil
Mammoth Basil (Ocimum basilicum 'Mammoth') is a variety of basil known for its large leaves and robust flavor. It is a popular herb in culinary applications and is often used in Italian cuisine and Thai cuisine.

Mammoth Basil is characterized by its large, crinkled leaves that can reach up to 4 inches in length. The plant itself can grow up to 18-24 inches tall. The leaves are bright green in color and have a strong, sweet basil aroma. The plant produces small, white flowers in late summer.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
Like other varieties of basil, Mammoth Basil prefers warm temperatures and plenty of sunlight. It is typically grown as an annual, but can be grown as a perennial in tropical climates. The plant is sensitive to frost and should be planted after the last expected frost in spring. Mammoth Basil can be grown in containers or in the ground, and prefers well-drained soil.
Culinary Uses[edit | edit source]
Due to its large leaf size, Mammoth Basil is often used in recipes that call for a large amount of basil, such as pesto. The leaves can also be used whole in salads, or as a garnish. The flavor of Mammoth Basil is similar to that of Sweet Basil, but is often described as being more robust.
Medicinal Uses[edit | edit source]
While not as commonly used for medicinal purposes as other varieties of basil, Mammoth Basil does have some potential health benefits. It contains antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies suggest that basil can help reduce stress and improve mood.
