Manassas is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 42,772. The city is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area and is known for its significant role in the American Civil War.

History[edit | edit source]

Manassas was founded in 1852 at the junction of two railroads, the Manassas Gap Railroad and the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. The city is perhaps best known for the First Battle of Bull Run (also known as the First Battle of Manassas), the first major land battle of the American Civil War, which took place on July 21, 1861. A second battle, the Second Battle of Bull Run, occurred in late August 1862.

As of the 2020 census, the population of Manassas was 42,772. The city has a diverse population with a mix of different ethnic and racial groups. The median household income is $75,000, and the city has a relatively high standard of living compared to other parts of Virginia.

Manassas is served by the Manassas City Public Schools system, which includes several elementary schools, intermediate schools, and Osbourn High School. The city is also home to the Northern Virginia Community College's Manassas Campus.
