Mansfield Brewery
Mansfield Brewery was a prominent brewery located in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. Established in 1855, it became one of the largest independent breweries in the United Kingdom before its closure in 2001.
History[edit | edit source]
Mansfield Brewery was founded by Samuel Unwin in 1855. The brewery initially operated on a small scale, but it expanded significantly over the years. By the late 19th century, it had become a major player in the brewing industry in the East Midlands.
In 1922, the brewery was incorporated as Mansfield Brewery Company Ltd. The company continued to grow, acquiring several smaller breweries and expanding its product range. During the mid-20th century, Mansfield Brewery became known for its Mansfield Bitter, a popular ale in the region.
Products[edit | edit source]
Mansfield Brewery produced a variety of beers, including:
- Mansfield Bitter - A traditional bitter ale.
- Mansfield Mild - A mild ale with a lower alcohol content.
- Mansfield Pale Ale - A pale ale with a distinct hoppy flavor.
Acquisitions and Expansion[edit | edit source]
Throughout its history, Mansfield Brewery acquired several other breweries, including:
These acquisitions helped Mansfield Brewery to expand its market presence and increase its production capacity.
Closure[edit | edit source]
In 1999, Mansfield Brewery was acquired by Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries, now known as Marston's. The acquisition led to the eventual closure of the Mansfield Brewery site in 2001. The brewery's brands were absorbed into Marston's portfolio, and the original brewery site was redeveloped for other uses.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Despite its closure, Mansfield Brewery remains a significant part of Mansfield's industrial heritage. The brewery's former site has been redeveloped, but the legacy of its beers continues through Marston's.
