Maria Pia of Savoy (Maria Pia Teresa Amelia; 16 October 1847 – 5 July 1911) was a member of the House of Savoy and the Queen consort of Portugal. She was born in Turin, Italy, the daughter of Victor Emmanuel II, King of Sardinia, and Adelaide of Austria.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Maria Pia was born on 16 October 1847 in Turin, Italy. She was the daughter of Victor Emmanuel II and Adelaide of Austria. Maria Pia grew up in the royal court and received a comprehensive education befitting her status.
Marriage and Reign[edit | edit source]
Maria Pia married King Luís I of Portugal in 1862. As Queen consort, Maria Pia was known for her charitable work and support of various social causes. She played an active role in Portuguese society and was well-loved by the people.
During her time as Queen consort, Maria Pia was involved in various philanthropic activities and supported the arts and culture in Portugal. She was also known for her involvement in the construction of several charitable institutions.
Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]
After the death of King Luís I in 1889, Maria Pia lived the rest of her life in exile in Italy. She passed away on 5 July 1911 in Stresa, Italy. Maria Pia left behind a legacy of compassion and dedication to social causes.
