Marie Rennotte

Marie Rennotte (1844-1929) was a Belgian nurse and hospital administrator who played a significant role in the development of modern nursing in Belgium. She is best known for founding the first professional nursing school in Belgium, the Ecole d'Infirmières.

Marie Rennotte was born in 1844 in Liège, Belgium. Little is known about her early life and education, but it is known that she was drawn to the medical field from a young age.

Career[edit | edit source]

In 1873, Rennotte began her career as a nurse at the Hospital de Bavière in Liège. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the hospital's administrator in 1877. During her tenure, she implemented many reforms to improve patient care and hospital efficiency.

In 1884, Rennotte founded the Ecole d'Infirmières, the first professional nursing school in Belgium. The school was revolutionary for its time, offering a rigorous curriculum and high standards for admission. It played a crucial role in professionalizing nursing in Belgium and served as a model for other nursing schools in the country.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Rennotte's contributions to nursing in Belgium have been widely recognized. In 1924, she was awarded the Order of Leopold, one of Belgium's highest honors. Today, the Ecole d'Infirmières continues to operate as a leading nursing school in Belgium.
