Marine Commandos
== Marine Commandos ==
The Marine Commandos, also known as MARCOS, is a special forces unit of the Indian Navy. Formed in 1987, MARCOS is tasked with conducting a variety of special operations, including amphibious warfare, counter-terrorism, direct action, special reconnaissance, and unconventional warfare.
History[edit | edit source]
The Marine Commandos were established in 1987 as the Indian Marine Special Force (IMSF). The unit was later renamed MARCOS in 1991. The need for a specialized maritime force was felt after the Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, where the Indian Peace Keeping Force faced significant challenges.
Training[edit | edit source]
MARCOS undergoes one of the most rigorous training regimens in the world. The training includes parachuting, diving, demolition, and unarmed combat. The commandos are also trained in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations. The training is conducted in various environments, including jungles, mountains, and urban areas.
Operations[edit | edit source]
MARCOS has been involved in numerous operations, both within India and internationally. Some notable operations include:
- Operation Cactus in the Maldives (1988)
- Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka (1987-1990)
- Operation Black Tornado during the 2008 Mumbai attacks
- Anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden
Equipment[edit | edit source]
MARCOS is equipped with a wide range of specialized equipment, including:
- Assault rifles such as the Tavor TAR-21 and AK-103
- Sniper rifles like the Dragunov SVD
- Submachine guns such as the Heckler & Koch MP5
- Diving gear and underwater vehicles
- Night vision devices and thermal imaging equipment
Selection Process[edit | edit source]
The selection process for MARCOS is extremely stringent. Candidates undergo a three-day physical fitness and aptitude test, followed by a five-week-long "hell's week" designed to test their physical and mental endurance. Only a small percentage of candidates make it through the selection process.
