Mark Gastineau was born on November 20, 1956, in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He grew up in Springerville, Arizona, where he attended Round Valley High School. During his high school years, Gastineau excelled in both football and track, showcasing his athletic prowess early on.

Gastineau attended Eastern Arizona Junior College before transferring to Arizona State University. He later transferred to East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, where he continued to develop his skills as a defensive end. His performance in college football caught the attention of professional scouts.

New York Jets[edit | edit source]

Mark Gastineau was drafted by the New York Jets in the second round of the 1979 NFL Draft. He quickly became known for his aggressive playing style and his ability to sack the quarterback. Gastineau was a key member of the "New York Sack Exchange," a formidable defensive line that also included Joe Klecko, Marty Lyons, and Abdul Salaam.

Gastineau led the NFL in sacks in 1983 and 1984, earning him a reputation as one of the league's most feared pass rushers. He was selected to the Pro Bowl five times and was named an All-Pro three times during his career.

Gastineau retired from professional football in 1988. His decision to retire was influenced by personal reasons, including his relationship with actress Brigitte Nielsen.
