Mark Papermaster

Mark Papermaster is an American engineer and corporate executive. He is currently the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Executive Vice President of Technology and Engineering at AMD, a position he has held since October 2011.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Papermaster was born and raised in the United States. He received his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and later earned a Master's degree in the same field from the University of Vermont.

Career[edit | edit source]

Papermaster began his career at IBM, where he worked for 26 years. During his tenure, he held various roles in the development of the company's microprocessor technology. He was notably involved in the creation of the PowerPC architecture, a project jointly developed by IBM, Apple, and Motorola.

In 2008, Papermaster left IBM to join Apple as Senior Vice President of Devices Hardware Engineering. His move to Apple led to a legal dispute with IBM over a non-compete agreement, which was eventually settled. At Apple, Papermaster was responsible for the hardware engineering of the iPhone and iPod.

In 2011, Papermaster joined AMD as CTO and Executive Vice President of Technology and Engineering. At AMD, he has overseen the development of several key technologies, including the company's Zen microarchitecture.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Papermaster is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and serves on the Engineering Advisory Board of the University of Texas at Austin.
