Marocchino

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Marocchino is a popular coffee-based drink originating from Italy. The name "Marocchino" is derived from the Italian word for Moroccan, indicating its historical roots and connection to the North African country of Morocco.

History[edit | edit source]

The Marocchino was first created in the city of Alessandria, Italy, in the early 20th century. It was named after the color of the hats worn by Moroccan soldiers during the Rif War, which was a similar color to the drink when it was first made.

Preparation[edit | edit source]

A Marocchino is traditionally prepared in a small glass and consists of a shot of espresso, cocoa powder, and frothed milk. The preparation process involves dusting the bottom of the glass with cocoa, adding a shot of espresso, and then topping it off with frothed milk. The drink is then dusted with another layer of cocoa before serving.

Variations[edit | edit source]

There are several variations of the Marocchino, depending on the region in Italy. In some areas, the cocoa is added after the espresso, while in others, the cocoa is mixed with the espresso before the milk is added. Some variations also include a shot of liqueur, such as Amaretto or Sambuca, for added flavor.
