Marsh Supermarkets was an American retail food chain headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. The company was founded in 1931 by Ermal Marsh and grew to operate over 120 stores in Indiana and Ohio at its peak. Marsh Supermarkets was known for its innovation in the grocery industry, including being the first grocery store in the world to use barcode scanning technology.

Marsh Supermarkets was established in 1931 in Muncie, Indiana by Ermal Marsh. The company expanded rapidly, opening new stores across Indiana and Ohio. In 1968, Marsh Supermarkets became a publicly traded company on the NASDAQ stock exchange.

In 1974, Marsh made history by installing the first UPC scanner at its store in Troy, Ohio. This technological advancement revolutionized the grocery industry by streamlining the checkout process and improving inventory management.

Operations[edit | edit source]

Marsh Supermarkets operated various store formats, including traditional supermarkets, convenience stores, and specialty food stores. The company also owned and operated pharmacies within many of its locations.

The company was known for its commitment to customer service and community involvement. Marsh Supermarkets supported numerous local charities and community events throughout its operating regions.

Decline and Closure[edit | edit source]

Despite its early successes, Marsh Supermarkets faced increasing competition from national chains and changing consumer preferences. In 2006, the company was acquired by Sun Capital Partners, a private equity firm. However, financial difficulties persisted, leading to the closure of many stores.

In 2017, Marsh Supermarkets filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and subsequently closed its remaining stores. The company's assets were sold to various buyers, marking the end of an era for the once-prominent grocery chain.
