Martha Jones is a fictional character played by Freema Agyeman in the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. She is a companion of the Tenth Doctor, an incarnation of the Doctor, the series' protagonist portrayed by David Tennant.
Character History[edit | edit source]
Martha Jones first appears in the episode "Smith and Jones" (2007) where she meets the Doctor during a hospital's unexpected trip to the Moon. She becomes the Doctor's companion after the departure of Rose Tyler.
Series 3[edit | edit source]
Throughout Series 3, Martha travels with the Doctor and faces numerous adversaries, including the Daleks, the Cybermen, and the Master. Her character is notable for her intelligence, bravery, and medical expertise, which she frequently uses to assist the Doctor.
Subsequent Appearances[edit | edit source]
Martha returns in the series 4 episodes "The Sontaran Stratagem" and "The Poison Sky", and later in "The Stolen Earth" and "Journey's End". She also appears in the Torchwood series 2 episodes "Reset", "Dead Man Walking", and "A Day in the Death".
Character Development[edit | edit source]
Martha's character arc involves her growth from a medical student to a confident and capable doctor. Her unrequited love for the Doctor is a recurring theme, and her eventual decision to leave the TARDIS is driven by her desire to live her own life and not be defined by her relationship with the Doctor.
Family[edit | edit source]
Martha's family includes her mother, Francine Jones, her father, Clive Jones, her sister, Tish Jones, and her brother, Leo Jones. The dynamics within her family are explored in several episodes, particularly during the Master's takeover of Earth.
Significance[edit | edit source]
Martha Jones is significant for being the first black companion in the revived series of Doctor Who. Her character has been praised for breaking stereotypes and providing representation in a major science fiction series.
