MarthaWashingtonInn

The Martha Washington Inn is a historic hotel located in Abingdon, Virginia. Originally built in 1832 as a private residence for General Francis Preston and his family, the building has served various purposes over the years, including as a women's college, a hospital during the American Civil War, and finally as a hotel.

History[edit | edit source]

The Martha Washington Inn was constructed in 1832 by General Francis Preston, a prominent figure in the region. The building was initially a private residence for Preston, his wife Sarah Buchanan Preston, and their nine children. The house was designed in the Greek Revival style, which was popular in the United States during the early 19th century.

In 1858, the Preston family sold the property, and it was converted into the Martha Washington College, a school for young women. The college operated until 1932, when it closed due to financial difficulties.

During the American Civil War, the building was used as a hospital for both Union and Confederate soldiers. The inn is said to be haunted by the ghosts of soldiers who died there, as well as by the spirit of a young woman who attended the college.

In 1935, the building was converted into a hotel, which it remains to this day. The Martha Washington Inn is now a member of the Historic Hotels of America and is known for its luxurious accommodations and rich history.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

The Martha Washington Inn is an excellent example of Greek Revival architecture. The building features a symmetrical facade, large columns, and a pedimented gable. The interior of the inn has been carefully preserved and restored to maintain its historic character while providing modern amenities for guests.

Notable Features[edit | edit source]

  • The inn has a grand ballroom, which is often used for weddings and other special events.
  • There is a library that contains many historical documents and books related to the history of the inn and the surrounding area.
  • The inn's gardens are beautifully landscaped and provide a peaceful retreat for guests.
