Martin Bricknell

Lieutenant General Martin Charles Bricknell is a retired senior British Army officer and a prominent academic in the field of military medicine. He has made significant contributions to the development of military healthcare systems and has been involved in various international health initiatives.

Martin Bricknell was born in the United Kingdom. He pursued his medical education at the University of Southampton, where he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. Following his initial medical training, Bricknell furthered his education in public health and obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

Bricknell joined the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) and served in various capacities throughout his military career. His early postings included roles in primary care and field hospital settings, where he gained extensive experience in military healthcare delivery.

During his service, Bricknell was deployed on several operational tours, including assignments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iraq, and Afghanistan. These deployments provided him with firsthand experience in managing healthcare in challenging environments and contributed to his expertise in military medical operations.

Bricknell held several key leadership positions within the RAMC. He served as the Commanding Officer of 22 Field Hospital and later as the Commander of the Joint Medical Command. In these roles, he was responsible for overseeing the delivery of medical support to British forces and allied partners.
In 2015, Bricknell was appointed as the Surgeon General of the UK Armed Forces, a position he held until his retirement in 2019. As Surgeon General, he was the principal medical advisor to the Ministry of Defence and played a crucial role in shaping military medical policy and strategy.

After retiring from active military service, Bricknell transitioned to academia. He was appointed as a Professor of Conflict, Health, and Military Medicine at King's College London.
