Marwan Barghouti (born 6 June 1959) is a prominent Palestinian political figure and a member of the Fatah party. He is widely recognized for his role in the Second Intifada and his advocacy for the Palestinian cause.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Marwan Barghouti was born in the village of Kobar near Ramallah in the West Bank. He pursued higher education at Birzeit University, where he became actively involved in student politics and the Palestinian nationalist movement.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Barghouti joined the Fatah movement in his youth and quickly rose through its ranks. He became a key figure in the First Intifada and later in the Second Intifada, advocating for armed resistance against the Israeli occupation.

Arrest and Imprisonment[edit | edit source]

In 2002, Barghouti was arrested by Israel Defense Forces and subsequently tried and convicted on multiple charges, including involvement in attacks that resulted in the deaths of Israeli civilians. He was sentenced to multiple life terms in prison. Despite his imprisonment, Barghouti remains a significant figure in Palestinian politics and is often mentioned as a potential successor to Mahmoud Abbas.
