Matrix-M

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Matrix-M is an adjuvant used in the formulation of vaccines to enhance the body's immune response to the antigen present in the vaccine. It is a nanoparticle-based adjuvant developed by Novavax, a biotechnology company based in the United States. Matrix-M is used in several of Novavax's vaccine candidates, including its COVID-19 vaccine candidate, NVX-CoV2373.

Composition[edit | edit source]

Matrix-M is composed of saponin, a natural compound derived from the bark of the Quillaja saponaria tree. The saponin is formulated into nanoparticles using a proprietary process. These nanoparticles are then combined with the antigen in the vaccine to create a more potent immune response.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

The Matrix-M adjuvant works by enhancing the body's immune response to the antigen in the vaccine. It does this by stimulating the production of antibody cells and T cells, two key components of the immune system. The enhanced immune response leads to a stronger and longer-lasting immunity against the disease the vaccine is designed to prevent.

Use in Vaccines[edit | edit source]

Matrix-M is used in several of Novavax's vaccine candidates, including its COVID-19 vaccine candidate, NVX-CoV2373. In clinical trials, the use of Matrix-M in the NVX-CoV2373 vaccine has shown to produce a strong immune response, with high levels of antibodies and T cells.

Safety and Efficacy[edit | edit source]

The safety and efficacy of Matrix-M have been evaluated in several clinical trials. In general, vaccines containing Matrix-M have been found to be safe and well-tolerated. The enhanced immune response produced by Matrix-M has also been shown to increase the efficacy of the vaccines in which it is used.
