Max Schubert
Australian winemaker
Max Schubert (9 February 1915 – 6 March 1994) was a pioneering Australian winemaker who is best known for creating Penfolds Grange, one of Australia's most famous and highly regarded wines. His innovative techniques and dedication to quality helped elevate the status of Australian wines on the global stage.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Max Schubert was born in Tanunda, South Australia, a region known for its rich viticulture heritage. Growing up in the Barossa Valley, Schubert was exposed to winemaking from an early age, which sparked his interest in the field. He began his career in the wine industry at the age of 15, working as a messenger boy for Penfolds, a prominent Australian winery.
Career at Penfolds[edit | edit source]
Schubert's talent and passion for winemaking quickly became apparent, and he rose through the ranks at Penfolds. In 1948, he was appointed as the company's chief winemaker. During his tenure, Schubert was sent to Europe to study winemaking techniques, which greatly influenced his approach to creating wines.
Creation of Penfolds Grange[edit | edit source]
In the early 1950s, inspired by the great Bordeaux wines he had tasted in France, Schubert set out to create a wine that could rival the best in the world. This led to the development of Penfolds Grange, a Shiraz-based wine that incorporated innovative techniques such as the use of new oak barrels for aging.
Initially, Grange was not well received by Penfolds management or the public, but Schubert persisted in his efforts. By the 1960s, the wine began to gain recognition for its quality and aging potential, eventually becoming a flagship product for Penfolds and a symbol of Australian winemaking excellence.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Max Schubert's contributions to the wine industry have had a lasting impact. His dedication to quality and innovation set new standards for Australian wines and inspired future generations of winemakers. In recognition of his achievements, Schubert received numerous awards and honors throughout his career.
