The McDowell Valley AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in Mendocino County, California. This wine region is recognized for its unique climate and soil conditions that are ideal for the cultivation of a variety of grape vines.

The McDowell Valley AVA was established by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) in 1982. It was one of the first AVAs to be recognized in Mendocino County, a region known for its diverse wine production.
Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]
The McDowell Valley AVA is located in the southeastern part of Mendocino County. The valley is surrounded by hills and mountains, which protect the vineyards from the coastal winds. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The soil in the valley is primarily gravelly loam, which is well-draining and ideal for grape cultivation.

The McDowell Valley AVA is known for its production of a variety of grape types, including Syrah, Grenache, and Viognier. The region is particularly recognized for its old vine Syrah, some of which date back to the 1910s.
