Meal

A meal is an eating occasion that takes place at a certain time and includes specific, prepared food, or the food eaten on that occasion. The names used for specific meals in English vary greatly, depending on the speaker's culture, the time of day, or the size of the meal.

Types of meals[edit | edit source]

Meals occur primarily at homes, restaurants, and cafeterias, but may occur anywhere. Regular meals occur on a daily basis, typically several times a day. Special types of meals, such as feasts and banquets, where there is often a varied and elaborate menu, are also prevalent in many cultures.

Breakfast is the first meal of a day, most often eaten in the early morning before undertaking the day's work. It typically consists of foods that are high in energy content such as grains, dairy products, and fruits.

Lunch, the second meal of the day, is often eaten around midday and can range from a light meal to a full-course dining experience. It often includes foods such as sandwiches, salads, and a variety of hot dishes.

Dinner usually refers to the largest and most formal meal of the day, which today is typically eaten in the evening. The meal can include multiple courses, such as an appetizer, main dish, and dessert.

Meal preparation, often referred to as "meal prep," is the process of planning and preparing meals. This often involves selecting and purchasing ingredients, reading and following recipes, and using cooking techniques to create a meal.

Cultural variations[edit | edit source]

The types and nature of meals can vary widely in different cultures. In some cultures, meals can be a social occasion of great importance, while in others they can be very minimal and simple affairs.
