MedFlight

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

MedFlight is a non-profit air ambulance service that provides critical care transportation to patients in need. MedFlight operates both helicopter and ground ambulance services, and is staffed by highly trained medical professionals including paramedics, nurses, and physicians.

History[edit | edit source]

MedFlight was established in 1983 as a joint venture between Ohio State University Medical Center and Grant Medical Center. The organization was created to provide rapid response medical care to the most critically ill and injured patients in the Ohio region. Since its inception, MedFlight has expanded its services to include ground ambulance transportation and has grown to operate nine helicopter bases and several Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICUs) across the state.

Services[edit | edit source]

MedFlight provides both air and ground critical care transportation. The organization's helicopter fleet is equipped with advanced medical equipment and staffed by highly trained medical professionals. MedFlight's ground ambulance service, known as MedCare Ambulance, operates Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICUs) that provide the same level of care as the air service.

MedFlight's services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The organization responds to both scene calls, such as car accidents and industrial accidents, and inter-facility transfers, where a patient needs to be moved from one medical facility to another for specialized care.

Staff and Training[edit | edit source]

MedFlight's medical teams are composed of paramedics, nurses, and occasionally physicians. All medical staff undergo rigorous training and continuing education to ensure they are equipped to provide the highest level of care. In addition to their medical training, flight crew members are also trained in aviation safety and survival skills.

Partnerships[edit | edit source]

MedFlight has established partnerships with several hospitals and healthcare systems in the Ohio region. These partnerships allow for seamless coordination of care and rapid response times. MedFlight also works closely with local emergency medical services (EMS) and fire departments to ensure the best possible patient outcomes.
